Bat Boy: The Musical (New York City Center Cast Recording)
A Supermarket Tabloid Freak
In 1992, the infamous tabloid Weekly World News ran a grotesque front-page photo: a half-boy, half-bat creature had been discovered in a subterranean cave in Hope Falls, West Virginia.
Most readers tossed it into the trash with a smirk. But composer-lyricist Laurence O’Keefe (who would later create Legally Blonde and Heathers) heard music beneath the ink: what if this creature desperately wanted to be human? What if he possessed a capacity for love deeper than any ordinary citizen in that pious town?
This August 2026 cast recording from the New York City Center Gala production re-orchestrates the cult masterwork for twelve musicians and features three new songs. Starring Broadway prodigy Taylor Trensch in the titular role, it is nothing short of a miracle.
From Screeching Bloodsucker to Oxford Gentleman
The first act pivots on the outrageous transformation from feral beast to educated gentleman.
The townsfolk want him burned at the stake, but warm-hearted Meredith Parker (the peerless Kerry Butler) shields him. When Edgar puts on a tailored suit and bursts into song in pristine Oxford English, the audience goes from laughing out loud to feeling a sudden ache in their throat.
He learns how to pour Earl Grey; he learns proper table manners. He assumes that if he is only civil enough, humanity will embrace him. But the cruelty of human prejudice is far sharper than any cave-dweller’s fangs.
“Comfort and Joy”: Shattering the Facade
O’Keefe’s score is a dizzying kaleidoscope of 80s glam-rock, soaring gospel chorales, and razor-sharp operatic counterpoint.
During the Act I Christmas finale “Comfort and Joy,” town hypocrisy, Dr. Parker’s simmering jealousy, Meredith’s protective anxiety, and Edgar’s earnest prayer collide in a torrential four-way counterpoint.
While the climax careens into Jacobean blood tragedy, Edgar’s dying plea is devastating.
There is a Bat Boy inside each of us—longing for connection, terrified that the moment we emerge from our cave, the daylight will burn us to cinder.
