A Vinyl Record in Granada

Years ago in a modest living room in Granada, a little girl sat on the carpet listening to an old stereo playing Jascha Heifetz.

The sound sliced through the summer heat like a silver blade—flawless, laser-focused, without an ounce of indulgent sentimentality, yet leaving behind a trail of radiant silver light. That girl was María Dueñas. Years later, when she walked into Abbey Road Studios to record this tribute, she held in her hands the very 1731 Stradivarius “Heifetz, Piel” that Heifetz himself once treasured.

Certain instruments hold their former master’s breath locked inside their varnish. The instant bow met string, it felt as though Heifetz’s ghost had struck a match in the air.

Korngold’s Golden Screen and Lalo’s Fierce Blood

At the core of the album stand two concertos forever welded to Heifetz’s legacy: Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto in D major, and Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole.

In Korngold’s opening movement, Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony unfurl a cinematic sunset from the golden age of Hollywood. When the plush velvet waves of the orchestra swell, Dueñas does not drown. Her upper register possess an uncommon steeliness—not fragile tears, but the resolute stride of a traveler bathed in blinding sunlight.

In Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole, the Andalusian blood in her veins catches fire. Her staccato articulations are clean and perilous, like the sweep of a matador’s cape scented with gunpowder and the percussive stomps of flamenco.

Starlight Encores: Saying Goodbye in the Shadows

Alongside the two orchestral pillars, Dueñas joins veteran pianist Itamar Golan for two of Heifetz’s signature encore arrangements: Debussy’s Beau Soir and Ponce’s Estrellita.

What remains most haunting about Heifetz was never merely the mechanical perfection that earned him the moniker of an impassive technician; it was the quiet melancholy that slipped out during his encores—a solitary titan looking back at an emptied hall as the stage lights died down.

Dueñas understands that loneliness. Her Estrellita is not an innocent lullaby; it is a letter of gratitude whispered across time to an unreachable star.
