Five Mysterious Dots upon the Title Page

In the early autumn of 1910, among the rolling green hills of Worcestershire, fifty-three-year-old Edward Elgar completed the most expansive, deeply personal score of his life: the Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61.

Across the dedication page, he inscribed a cryptic sentence in Spanish from Cervantes: “Aquí está encerrada el alma de …..” (Herein is enshrined the soul of …..).

Who was concealed behind those five enigmatic dots? A departed Edwardian golden age? Or his soul-muse Alice Stuart-Wortley, whom he affectionately nicknamed “Windflower”? Elgar took the secret to his grave, confiding only to a close friend: “It’s full of something we all feel, isn’t it? I have written my soul into it.”

Over a century later, Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang joined forces with conductor Robin Ticciati and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin to create a recording on Warner Classics that captured the 2025 Gramophone Concerto Award.

A Silver Filament in the Autumn Wind

Listeners reared on the imperial nobility of Heifetz or the youthful fire of Menuhin will be struck immediately by Frang’s unexpected vulnerability.

She does not treat this fifty-minute monolith as a suit of brass armor. When her solo entrance emerges after the three-minute orchestral exposition, it is not a declaration of mastery, but a trembling whisper in an autumn gust.

Her tone shimmers like gossamer caught in morning mist; her pianissimi are so tender one holds one’s breath. Ticciati’s direction is equally revelatory: having spent a decade at Glyndebourne, he shapes the DSO Berlin with the supple, breathing elasticity of a great vocal accompanist.

The emotional peak arrives in the finale’s unprecedented Cadenza accompagnata. Frang hovers gently above the fingerboard, while the orchestral strings “thrum” with the soft pads of their fingers (pizzicato tremolando), mimicking the sound of distant waves breaking on an empty shore. Amidst this nocturnal hush, Frang looks back across all the concerto’s earlier themes—like a traveler boarding a night ship, casting one last lingering gaze upon a receding homeland.

An Amber Enshrinement

The disc concludes with a gentle three-minute encore, Carissima, performed with pianist Thomas Hoppe, folding away the emotional turbulence of the concerto like clean white linen.

At the end of an exhausting day, this album is a sanctuary. The soul Elgar locked away over a hundred years ago steps into the room, reawakened by the silver fingers of a Norwegian artist.

In the glow of a rainy evening, Frang’s long, unbroken lines remind us of a timeless truth: those we have loved deeply never truly depart; they remain enshrined forever in the enduring cadence of great art.
