A River Flowing Through Five Generations

A British conductor once said that conducting Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies 4, 5 and 6 is like walking every road in Russia in one go — the tragic, the fateful, and the lonely triumph. Gergiev turns that sentence into lived experience.

Three Full-Throttle Live Nights

This Philips 475 6315 gathers three live recordings from different years: No. 4 from the Musikverein, Vienna, October 2002; No. 5 reaching back to the Salzburg Festival in July 1998 (captured by ORF); No. 6 another Musikverein night in September 2004. The pairing of Gergiev and the Vienna Philharmonic — a Russian conductor in dialogue with a German-Austrian orchestra — is the most beautiful tension of the whole set.

The Pathétique and Nine Final Days

The Sixth, Pathétique, is Tchaikovsky’s last testament: it premiered on October 28, 1893, and nine days later he was gone. Gergiev’s Pathétique is not grief — it is the magnificent fearlessness after “fate knocks at the door.” The finale does not weep; it is the whole universe saying to you: it is over, but this life was worth it.

Gergiev and Taiwan: Four Taipei Nights

Gergiev is among the Russian conductors who have visited Taiwan most often: the Mariinsky’s first Taipei stop in 2002, Tainan and Taipei in 2014, Wagner’s Das Rheingold in October 2016, and a full Swan Lake in July 2019. For Taiwanese fans, his name has for years been synonymous with Mariinsky grandeur.

Further Listening

If Tchaikovsky’s string writing moves you, the Bolshoi Ballet’s Swan Lake sets the same musical river dancing in ballet form. And if you want more of that “Russian conductor + German-Austrian orchestra” dynamite, Gergiev’s other Philips and Decca recordings are a deep dive into the aesthetics of Russian conducting.
