Saariaho: Adriana Mater
A Mother’s Womb After the Cannons Fall Silent
War’s most indelible wounds are rarely inscribed on battlefield granite; they are buried deep in the bodies of mothers left to survive among the ashes.
The late Finnish master Kaija Saariaho (1952–2023) poured her soul into her second opera, Adriana Mater. Recorded in a landmark production by her lifelong brother-in-art Esa-Pekka Salonen and the San Francisco Symphony, this Deutsche Grammophon release claimed the 2026 Gramophone Opera Award. It is both an operatic triumph and an unforgettable requiem for one of the greatest composers of the twenty-first century.
Seeds of Hatred or Fruit of Grace?
Featuring a searing libretto by Lebanese-French novelist Amin Maalouf, the opera unfolds in a war-torn country. Adriana is brutally raped by a drunk soldier, Tsargo, during an armed raid. Her sister begs her to terminate the pregnancy, but Adriana chooses to bear the child.
Seventeen years later, her son Yonas learns the truth of his conception and takes up a rifle to hunt down his blinded, decrepit father. Singaporean-British mezzo Fleur Barron delivers an emotionally shattering performance of Adriana, supported by Salonen’s incandescent mastery of Saariaho’s spectral palette: glassy string tremolos, nocturnal contrabassoons, and shivering celesta that ache with unspeakable grief.
Lowering the Barrel
When Yonas corners the blind Tsargo in a ruined alley, his finger trembles on the trigger. Yet looking into his broken father’s weeping, sightless eyes, Yonas realizes that pulled triggers only birth new monsters.
Returning to his mother empty-handed, Adriana embraces him in an ethereal halo of strings: “We did not kill him… you are not his son; you are mine.” Saariaho leaves the world an enduring testament that forgiveness alone can vanquish the darkness of war.
