Paddington the Musical (Original West End Cast)
A Bear, a Jar of Marmalade
When was the last time you saw a musical that made you laugh all the way through—and quietly moved you to tears?
In winter 2025, London’s West End’s Savoy Theatre welcomed a small Peruvian bear in a blue coat and red hat—Paddington. With him came that ever-present jar of orange marmalade, and a story about where “home” is.
The musical is based on Michael Bond’s classic children’s books, continuing the hugely popular live-action film series that began in 2014.
This original cast recording, made at Abbey Road Studios, was released in 2026.
A Bear Who Sings
Turning a bear into a singing protagonist sounds risky. But Tom Fletcher—lead singer of McFly—pulled it off.
Fletcher’s melodies are catchy, carrying the wit and warmth of British musical theatre. This isn’t an abstruse work of art; it’s genuinely “family” music you can hum after one listen.
When James Hameed’s voice rises from the depths of the stage, speaking that first line—“Please look after this bear”—everyone’s heart melts.
The Definition of Home
The most moving thing about Paddington has never been the bear’s adventures, but the question he keeps asking: what is home?
Paddington comes from “darkest Peru.” He loses his home, yet finds a new belonging with the Brown family in London. This is a story about immigration, about being accepted, about “home being not a place, but the people who make you feel safe.”
In today’s world, that means more than ever.
Why Listen
This recording shone at the 2026 Laurence Olivier Awards, receiving multiple nominations.
It has also been announced for Broadway in 2027.
If you’re tired of heavy musicals probing humanity’s darker side, this album is a gentle remedy. It has laughter, tears, adventure, and warmth—like that ever-present jar of marmalade, giving you a little sweetness and a little strength.
